Discover how 22 acres just one mile north of Alexandria became Ivy Hill Cemetery, established in 1854, and uncover the stories behind its historic landscape. Why is there a monument at the entrance with no one buried beneath it? Who donated the land that became the cemetery? And which gravesite is our most visited?
Join us for a guided 60–90-minute walking tour through Ivy Hill’s historic grounds and learn how the cemetery came to be, from its early beginnings to its role in preserving Alexandria’s past. Along the way, you’ll visit the resting places of some of the cemetery’s most notable residents—individuals who shaped the city through business, politics, and public service.
Explore the lives of apothecary owners, bank founders, treaty writers, hotel proprietors, civic leaders, and numerous veterans whose stories are woven into Alexandria’s history. This tour offers a unique opportunity to experience the cemetery not only as a place of remembrance, but also as an open-air museum of local heritage.
Reservations required. No walk-ups. Please wear comfortable shoes. Don’t forget sunscreen and water. $20. Please contact our historian, Catherine, at cweinraub@ihchps.org
